PARIS DREAM COMES TO AN END

New Zealand’s hopes of advancing to the quarter-finals of the men’s hockey in Paris is over after a brutal 5-0 loss to Australia.

It was a game that didn’t reflect the final scoreline with New Zealand creating a number of decent chances but continuing their poor streak of being unable to convert penalty corners.

The Kiwis will also feel aggrieved by the quality of umpiring, not only in this game, but for every match which stifled opportunities and gave freedom to opposition.

Australia’s first goal came in controversial circumstances when the ball hit the foot of an attacking player on the way into the goal. The on-field umpire called no goal but the Australian’s referred the decision with the video umpire somehow overturning the goal and awarding a goal to Australia.

Their second goal came when a crash ball from outside the circle missed everyone but rebounded off the post into the path of Blake Govers who wasn’t going to let an easy opportunity go to waste.

Australia’s other three goals came from two penalty corners, one which should’ve been saved, and a well executed move from the wing with a baseline pass for an easy tap in.

New Zealand still has one match remaining at this Olympics when they take on Ireland tomorrow.
