Sam Charlton named Player of the Year by peers

With Covid-19 halting the Annual Hockey New Zealand Awards Dinner back in April, this year we are virtually recognising the winners of our awards, including the High-Performance awards. Over the next few days, we’ll be announcing the winners of our Vantage Black Sticks Player, Players’ Player and U21 Player of the Year Awards for both genders.

Today, it’s the 2019 Vantage Black Sticks Women’s Players’ Player of the Year Award.  The Players’ Player of the Year is voted on by the 25 Vantage Black Sticks National Squad. The award is given to the teammate that they deem has shown great leadership and performance both on and off the pitch.

For 2019, the Women’s Players’ Player of the Year has gone to Sam Charlton.

Since making her debut in 2010 Charlton has gone on to represent the Vantage Black Sticks on 228 occasions. In that time, she has competed at two Olympic Games and became a Commonwealth Games Gold Medalist in 2018 on the Gold Coast.

Charlton is an incredible leader both on and off the turf and her preparation to ensure she is performing at her peak performance is inspirational.
