Alpiners look to ascend to the top

The Southern Alpiners Women will be led by current Performance Network Coach Aaron Ford. He will have plenty of experience on the sideline with him in current Waikato and previous National Hockey League-winning coaches Reiner Vellinga and former Black Stick Kate Trolove as his assistants.

The Alpiners Women will be the dark horse of the competition as they feature the least amount of players who have played at international level.

However, they’ll be confident they can score plenty of goals with their squad featuring the all-time leading goal-scorer for the Vantage Black Sticks, Olivia Merry. If given any space in the circle Merry is deadly with one of the strongest and most accurate forehand hits in world hockey.

Merry will have Black Sticks teammates Rachel McCann and drafted defender Frances Davies on the pitch with her. Look for Davies to bring calm and solidarity to the Alpiners defensive end.

The Southern Alpiners feature an impressive mix of current Vantage Black Sticks as well as some of the top up-and-coming talent in the country. New Zealand captain Blair Tarrant will feature in a side that has seven of the 25-member national squad.

With 11 of the Alpiners having donned the black shirt, they will be hoping to combine well on the turf and start the competition off on the right foot.

This squad will not struggle to trouble the scorers with world-class forwards Hugo Inglis and Sam Lane leading a strike unit that would cause headaches for any defensive unit in world hockey. They will have Kane Russell on hand should they struggle to get clear chances off. Russell is one of the premier drag flickers in world hockey and will be a huge asset for the team that represents the entire South Island.
